Food Issues with Adopted, Foster, and Kinship Kids

Food issues in adopted, foster, or kinship children are a common struggle for many families. Eating challenges occur for many reasons, including food insecurity, using food as a weapon of manipulation or control, unhealthy expressions of food as love, poverty, and food deserts. Even children adopted or fostered from birth can experience feeding challenges. When a child has a history of prenatal substance exposure, the risk of this challenge increases. Parents and caregivers need education and support to help their children overcome these challenges and develop healthy habits and attitudes toward food and eating.
